Mardy A. Burleson, a South Carolina middle school teacher, filed a lawsuit against five individuals for defamation after being accused of 'grooming' students with a pronoun survey.
The survey, which included questions about students' pronouns, was intended to create a supportive environment based on Burleson's experiences with LGBTQ+ youth, especially after a tragedy involving her transgender son's friend.
Despite previous uses of the survey without complaints, accusations arose when a parent claimed it violated state laws and threatened Burleson's teaching career.
Burleson stressed her commitment to student privacy, assuring them the survey results would remain confidential and encouraging open communication about their identities.
