On Monday, a middle school in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood celebrated the opening of its very own free grocery store. The on-campus grocery store is from Goodr, an Atlanta startup that uses food that would otherwise be wasted to combat hunger.
'If students don't have access to adequate and healthy food, they will not be able to access their education - which is why we are excited to partner with Goodr and Amazon to provide this basic need for our families,' said school Principal Tyson Fechter.
Goodr uses surplus products from retailers, distributors and manufacturers to stock its grocery stores. The middle school's market is funded by Amazon, with the space provided by the YMCA of Greater San Francisco.
District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton noted that the market gives people the ability to 'shop with dignity,' contrasting it with the traditional food pantry experience.
