San Jose education leaders delay decision on school closures - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

The Franklin-McKinley School District board has decided to postpone a decision regarding the closure of several schools due to financial difficulties and declining enrollment. The board's vote of 3-2 to delay the decision reflects the complex situation, as the district has lost nearly 40% of its student population since 2010. A consolidation committee has proposed closing three schools, despite significant pushback from trustees and community members who are advocating for alternative funding solutions and expressing concern over the impact on families.
"Over the past months, we have reviewed hundreds of pages of information. We've evaluated the budget numerous times. We have sought financial assistance... that is not sustainable."
"We're placing undo anxiety and stress on those children and those parents by even talking about closing those schools," he said.
"Let our kids grow close to home," and "Please don't close our school. We are a family," were sentiments echoed by parents and students rallying against the closures.
"The board doesn't have sufficient information to make a decision," teacher Celeste Dolezal commented.
