Since Cornell's founding, we've been committed to educating students from every background, but the Supreme Court's decision has led to a noticeable decline in the racial diversity of our entering fall 2024 class.
The data show that students who identify as Black dropped from 11.7% to 7.7%, and Hispanic students decreased from 16.7% to 10.5%, reflecting a troubling trend in diversity.
Our approach to categorizing multiracial students affects the data; students can be counted in multiple racial categories, affecting overall diversity statistics.
This decision does not undermine our commitment to diversity, yet we must acknowledge that the changes in admissions will challenge us to find new ways to support all backgrounds.
