Kohl's is closing its Mountain View store as part of a broader strategy, with 27 underperforming locations shut nationwide, including nine in California alone.
The Los Altos School District purchased the 11.7-acre shopping center site to build a new school, moving forward after years of planning and closure of non-viable businesses.
Assistant Superintendent Erik Walukiewicz explained that Kohl's lease would expire after the store’s closure, which reinforces the district's future educational plans for the site.
Kohl's has been paying $50,000 monthly rent to the school district, but with its impending closure, the space will be cleared for anticipated school development.
