Seven individuals connected to Columbus High School in Florida will be involved in the College Football Playoff National Championship between Miami and Indiana. The Columbus connections include Miami head coach Mario Cristobal, Miami assistant Alex Mirabal, and former Explorers players Fernando Mendoza, Alberto Mendoza, Bryce Fitzgerald, Ryan Rodriguez and Vinny Gonzalez. All five former players won a state title at Columbus. Cristobal and Fernando Mendoza Sr. were teammates at Columbus. Columbus is located five miles from the University of Miami and 20 miles from Hard Rock Stadium. Columbus staff expressed pride in the many local ties to the title game.
