ICE fears keep San Jose students away from school - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

San Jose students are facing increased anxiety and trauma due to aggressive immigration enforcement policies under the Trump administration. Attendance in schools saw a significant decline, with a drop of 5,000 students in January and 10,000 in February. The concentration of immigrant families—where 60% of students have at least one immigrant parent—has intensified the impact of fears surrounding ICE actions. Programs aimed at supporting these students report a drop in participation, leading to concerns over academic milestones and overall well-being.
Students have dropped out of summer and afterschool enrichment programs, opting to stay home in fear of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detaining their family and friends.
This fear has been causing significant trauma that has been preventing children from learning and reaching their socio-emotional and academic milestones.
Pacheco Jr. represents Area 4, which includes a majority portion of San Jose Unified School District, a portion of Oak Grove School District and a portion of East Side Union High School District.
We all know that when students miss 10% or more of school, they are less likely to be at grade level, graduate from high school or even attend college.
