On February 4, 2025, over 100 Chicago public schools participated in 'walk-in' actions organized by the Chicago Teachers Union, teachers, and community supporters to protest against President Trump's policies that threaten Black history, LGBTQIA+ rights, and immigrant welfare. As part of a national day of activism, participants aimed to stand with vulnerable students, emphasizing the importance of inclusive education amidst the potential appointment of Linda McMahon to the Department of Education. Furthermore, Chicago schools have initiated 'Sanctuary Teams' to support undocumented students, reflecting ongoing efforts to defend marginalized communities in light of heightened ICE threats.
We cannot remain silent while the administration continues to dismantle our educational values and target our most vulnerable communities.
The fight for an inclusive curriculum that covers Black history and LGBTQIA+ rights is paramount; education must reflect the diversity of our society.
