FG scraps JSS, SSS, introduces 12-year basic education model
Briefly

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced the replacement of the 6-3-3-4 education system with a compulsory 12-year basic education model, limiting entry age for tertiary education to 16 years. This initiative, revealed by the Minister of Education during a National Council on Education meeting, aims to reduce dropout rates and enhance learning by offering a standardized curriculum and early exposure to vocational skills. The reform is designed to align Nigeria's education system with global best practices, emphasizing the need for foundational knowledge before specializing at tertiary levels.
"Extending basic education to 12 years will ensure a standardized curriculum that is uniformly implemented across the nation," Alausa said.
"By subsuming secondary education into basic education, students will benefit from uninterrupted learning up to the age of 16," the Minister noted.
"This reform aligns Nigeria's education system with international standards, fostering better educational outcomes and skills for higher education and employment," stressed Alausa.
"Many developed nations have implemented similar systems where basic education spans 12 years, ensuring that students acquire foundational knowledge before entering specialized studies."
