The Success Academy Charter High School is facing a space crisis, as city educrats allocate less space for its nearly 900 students compared to three other traditional public schools sharing the building, which each have fewer than 300 students. Critics argue that this disparity forces students into inappropriate environments, such as a choir practicing in a stairwell. While state law mandates equitable space distribution, the charter school finds itself nearly at full capacity, resulting in larger average class sizes compared to its counterparts.
Under state law, the city Department of Education is either required to provide charter schools space in their public buildings or pay for their leases in private facilities.
The charter school is now at nearly 100% capacity in its space, while the other three schools in the building have some average class sizes around 16.
