Chancellor Mildred García emphasized that while the focus on graduation rates is vital, preparing students for careers post-graduation is equally crucial. She believes universities must evolve to provide support that ensures students not only graduate but thrive in their careers, addressing the unique challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students.
The emphasis is shifting from merely increasing graduation rates to equipping students with the necessary skills, connections, and support that will allow them to succeed professionally after they leave the university, recognizing the diverse backgrounds of today’s student population.
García pointed out that many new majority students lack the social capital and connections to navigate the job market effectively, underscoring a critical need for universities to leverage partnerships and data to enhance career readiness.
The upcoming Student Success Framework aims to provide comprehensive support for students, including career counseling and internship opportunities, to ensure they not only earn their degrees but transition successfully into fulfilling careers.
