Barnstable educator allegedly fired over Facebook posts sues district
""because his Facebook posts did not reflect the values of Barnstable Public Schools,""
""Public schools do not get to silence employees simply because they express opinions that administrators dislike,""
""This lawsuit seeks to hold Barnstable Public Schools accountable for violating the First Amendment and for reneging on promises that cost our client his tenured career.""
""clearly and unambiguously""
John Bergonzi left a Brockton teaching position to become an associate principal at Barnstable High School for fall 2024 and was terminated a few months into the role. The superintendent allegedly told him he was fired "because his Facebook posts did not reflect the values of Barnstable Public Schools." Judicial Watch filed a federal lawsuit in Boston alleging retaliation for protected speech, First Amendment violations, and breach of contract. Bergonzi says all seven posts were shared before his application and addressed issues of public concern, and that he was promised review of his social media before hiring. He seeks damages for the termination.
