After calls for gun safety, Tennessee votes to arm teachers
Briefly

In March 2023, an assailant shot and killed three students and three staff members at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, prompting calls for gun safety legislation.
Republican Governor wanted a red flag law to prevent dangerous individuals from having guns, but it was not taken up. Instead, in 2024, bills for expanding gun access were passed.
While proponents argue arming teachers will deter shooters, there's little evidence to support this claim. Many Tennessee school districts have already decided against allowing teachers to carry guns.
New law requires teacher approval by principal, education commissioner, and sheriff, 40 hours of training, psychological evaluation, fingerprints submission, and handgun permit for carrying guns in schools.
