Ryan Cornner, president of Glendale Community College, emphasizes the importance of scenario training for disaster preparedness. When wildfires struck near the campus, GCC had recently begun emergency preparedness training, which became a real-life exercise. The college serves a significant student population, many of whom faced housing losses. Cornner highlighted the new challenges of supporting part-time adjunct faculty and stressed the importance of community support for employees who lose their homes. He also notes the role of institutions in fostering future first responders and providing safe environments for displaced students from nearby destroyed schools.
The No. 1 lesson about disaster relief Ryan Cornner would give college presidents is: do scenario training.
We were actually planning a tabletop exercise for spring, and boy, did we get a tabletop exercise. It was just real, said Cornner.
GCC has expanded its efforts to provide access to basic needs for its students and has recognized that its part-time adjunct faculty need the most support.
As an employer, we think that the real focus is making sure that the workplace has what it needs and making sure people feel supported in their work.
