3% of American High Schoolers Identify as Transgender, First National Survey Finds
Briefly

The first nationally representative survey from the CDC found that 3.3% of high school students identify as transgender and 2.2% as questioning their gender, revealing alarming mental health issues among these groups.
Kathleen Ethier stated, 'We have 5 percent of young people in the country who, because of the way they identify around their gender, are stigmatized, bullied... consequently have poorer mental health and higher risk for suicide than their cisgender peers.'
The 2023 survey revealed that about one in four transgender students attempted suicide in the past year, highlighting the severe impacts of bullying and discrimination they face at school.
Despite alarming mental health statistics for transgender teens, their issues are often overshadowed by political debates, as around two dozen states have passed laws restricting their rights.
