Leaks, termites and rent increases: One Oaklander's housing ordeal
Briefly

The article recounts the experience of a renter in Oakland facing housing instability exacerbated by unresolved maintenance issues from a new building owner. Initially, the author's long-term residence near Lake Merritt was manageable due to relatively affordable rent, but subsequent ownership changes brought neglect. Despite taking action, including contacting code enforcement and addressing safety concerns, the author's attempts to rectify problems like mold and pests met systemic hurdles involving inadequate inspections and lack of accountability from the landlord, necessitating personal investment in resolution.
Like many in Oakland and the Bay Area struggling under the rising cost of living, I rent my housing. I was in my previous apartment for a long time until problems with a new building owner and a litany of unresolved maintenance issues arose, setting in motion a chain of events that resulted in me leaving my home and having to navigate a period of housing instability.
When the building was sold, the new owner was unwilling to address various issues that were mounting. I endured because I loved the location, but I knew that I couldn't stand the conditions much longer. So I decided to take action on my own.
I eventually paid out of pocket for my own report from a private inspection company, verifying the presence of mold and other issues that were not addressed by the landlord.
