BPD arrest man with BB gun near Longfellow Middle School
Briefly

On February 6, 2025, a Berkeley man was arrested for walking near Longfellow Middle School with a BB gun disguised to resemble a real firearm. Witnesses started calling 911 around 3:45 PM as he ignored police instructions. Officers arrived swiftly and attempted to de-escalate the situation, eventually convincing him to set the firearm down. Despite the BB gun being made to look like a real weapon, the man was arrested for obstruction and for illegally altering the imitation firearm, although no formal charges were filed afterwards.
When officers arrived, they spotted the man and took steps to keep passersby away. They tried to give the man instructions but he ignored these instructions.
Eventually, the individual put down the long gun and was taken into custody. What had looked like a long gun was a BB gun covered with black tape over the tip.
