Berkeley police say beware of holiday season thieves and scammers
Briefly

Police Capt. Kevin Schofield reported to the Police Accountability Board on Dec. 11 that the holidays typically bring an uptick in retail crimes. As staffing allows, we will put out extra patrols in our business districts to deter criminals and support community outreach. Officers will share tips on how to avoid becoming victims, including not leaving packages on doorsteps or visible in cars and always locking doors and windows.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta urged residents to donate to charities this holiday season but warned of fraudsters. He advised residents to check charity registration on California's registry search tool and assess annual financial reports to confirm trustworthiness. He emphasized the importance of independent verification to avoid pressure from telemarketers and cautioned against lookalike websites that could steal personal information.
