With the May 7 deadline approaching, California's DMV urges residents to upgrade to a Real ID, which is necessary for domestic flights and federal access. As of now, 18.6 million Californians possess a Real ID. To upgrade, individuals must provide specific identity and residency documents. While the online application is encouraged, a visit to a DMV office is necessary to complete the process. The cost is $45 for a driver's Real ID and $39 for a state ID. Failure to present a Real ID after the deadline will prevent boarding domestic flights.
Once you get to the counter, it should take about 15 minutes, the agency said.
The DMV estimates 2 to 6 weeks for your Real ID to arrive.
