Some laid-off Oakland workers get their jobs back
Briefly

Oakland's city administrator Jestin Johnson announced that a third of the layoffs initially planned for city employees have been rescinded, with 24 individuals retaining their positions. However, 42 employees will still be laid off, and 34 will be reassigned to different roles. Johnson described these decisions as tough but necessary to address a $130 million budget deficit. Labor unions criticized the layoffs, claiming essential workers should not suffer from the city's financial mismanagement and alleging violations of civil service law, prompting union actions against the city.
I am hopeful that we can continue work to find alternatives to workforce reductions," Johnson said in his email to staff.
Unfortunately, it is essential employees who are once again paying the price for the city’s fiscal mismanagement," Blue said.
These layoffs are a challenging, but necessary move to patch the city's perilous budget," noted Johnson.
A coalition of local unions laid out their grievances and proposed alternative financial actions in a letter to the administration last week.
