The recent pedestrian deaths in North Berkeley have raised alarms about street safety in what is usually a quiet neighborhood. Two incidents involving older drivers occurred less than three months apart during the day, shocking residents. Efforts to enact traffic calming measures, such as speed tables, faced lengthy bureaucratic challenges, with existing regulations complicating potential solutions. Despite some progress, residents are frustrated as current measures seem inadequate, with safety installations failing to deter speeding, highlighting a pressing need for more effective interventions to protect pedestrians in the area.
What both collisions had in common is that they happened in the middle of the day and both involved older drivers 79 years old in the November collision, and 87 years old in the January one.
After years of organizing, we were finally able to get a speed table installed on Rose Street, near the intersection with Ordway Street, with bright yellow plastic stanchions alongside it.
