Navy names ship after Berkeley native Don Walsh
Briefly

The Navy’s future surveillance ship will be named after Don Walsh, a pioneering oceanographer whose historic dive to the Mariana Trench exemplified U.S. oceanographic leadership.
Walsh, along with Jacques Piccard, accomplished the remarkable feat of diving into the Challenger Deep, reaching a record depth of 35,797 feet, showcasing incredible human ingenuity.
Named the T-AGOS ship, the vessel will be 356 feet long and is set to enhance the Military Sealift Command’s capabilities in anti-submarine surveillance.
In his lifetime, Walsh achieved significant educational milestones, including a bachelor’s in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a doctorate in physical oceanography, demonstrating his commitment to marine science.
