"It's like a lot of the races nationally, it's a real split decision," said Pamela Drake, longtime progressive activist and former political staffer who previously worked in Bas' council office.
"I think people are tired of things the way they are," said Sean Dugar, chair of the Oakland Democratic Party, commenting on the demand for change across the country.
The electorate also voted in support of two allies of Thao, electing Nikki Fortunato Bas to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and reelecting Carroll Fife to City Council.
However, the attempts to oust two high-profile progressives, Mayor Sheng Thao and District Attorney Pamela Price, succeeded overwhelmingly, with both being recalled by over 60% of the vote.
