An elderly man, Darryl T. Kemp, who was facing execution for the 1978 rape and murder of Armida Wiltsey, died of natural causes at 88.
Kemp was convicted in 2009 and it marked his second death sentence, having previously received one in the 1950s that was later commuted.
The murder of Armida Wiltsey remained unsolved for decades until advances in forensic DNA testing in 2002 linked Kemp to the crime.
Wiltsey's body was discovered with signs of a struggle, which included evidence of being bound, revealing the violent nature of her murder.
