Councilmember Pam Foley aptly asked, "What took so long?" during the celebration to honor Janet Gray Hayes, whose election as mayor 50 years ago ignited a wave of women politicians in Santa Clara County.
Hayes faced and overcame obstacles in her early political journey, starting with a fight for better traffic safety for her children, which illustrates the passionate advocacy that drove her career.
"It’s not only a recognition of a remarkable leader but also a reminder of how far we’ve come in political representation since Hayes became the first female mayor in a major U.S. city 50 years ago," said Vice Mayor Rosemary Kamei.
The City Council declared November as Janet Gray Hayes Month and dedicated the new Rotunda in her honor, showcasing the collective effort of the committee and the council to finally recognize her contributions.
