In East Oakland, 15-year-old Derbing Alvarado was tragically shot and killed while heading to soccer practice with friends, in a robbery that turned deadly. Suspects demanded his fashionable backpack and opened fire after he refused to surrender it. Despite attempts to negotiate, Alvarado was shot in the stomach, succumbing to his injuries shortly after reaching the hospital. Eyewitnesses and family expressed their grief over the senseless violence, highlighting the impact on the community, while Alvarado's father mourned his son's untimely death during a vigil.
"Last thing you want is a call from your son asking you to go and get him, and telling you his friend got shot," Maricruz Reyes, a mother of one of Alvarado's friends, emphasized the emotional toll on families.
"They killed my son," his father Derbing Jose Alvarado Orosco cried at the vigil, reflecting the profound loss and sorrow felt by family and community.
