Driver in fatal East Oakland sidewalk crash was going over 50 mph, police say
"A 17-year-old boy was traveling northbound on 85th Avenue around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, "in excess of 50 mph," when he tried to make a delayed left turn onto International Boulevard and plowed into a crowd of people outside a liquor store, including a cyclist passing by."
"Three pedestrians were killed, and three others were transported to local hospitals for their injuries. As of Monday, one of the people injured was listed in critical condition, another was stable, and the third person was treated and released from the hospital."
"The driver was also transported to a nearby hospital for his injuries, Beere said during a press conference Monday afternoon. Police later arrested the driver in connection with the incident."
"Under state law, youth can be detained, and the probation department or district attorney can initiate a court case to determine whether the young person broke the law and how to rehabilitate them outside of the criminal legal system. For youth 16 and up, the DA and a judge can also have their case transferred to adult criminal court."
