The City of Vacaville's recent Martin Luther King Jr. Day proclamation has sparked controversy after Councilmember Roy Stockton attended a celebration in Vallejo instead of the local event hosted by the Vacaville People's Forum. Stockton, attending on behalf of Mayor John Carli, who was in Washington D.C., posted supportive comments on social media about unity and civil rights. However, local organizer Mary Vasquez criticized him for neglecting the event in his own city, stating he did not respond to the invitation.
I am truly appreciative to live in a community that not only recognizes the importance of [Dr. King's] message but actively works to uphold his dream of equality, justice, and love for all.
It's disappointing that you went to another city that you do not represent as a City Councilmember, but declined to respond to, or participate in, an MLK event right here in Vacaville.
