California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit alongside 17 other states to challenge President Trump's executive order that seeks to eliminate birthright citizenship for children born to non-citizen parents in the U.S. Bonta, who has a history of suing the Trump administration, argues that this order threatens the citizenship of thousands of U.S. children and aims to protect the rights of immigrants. The lawsuit asks for immediate intervention by a Massachusetts court to prevent the order from being enacted on February 19, citing potential harm to 20,000 children born in California annually.
"I have one message for President Trump: We will see you in court," Bonta told reporters Tuesday.
If allowed to stand, this order would endanger thousands of U.S. citizens who will be born in the next year.
The lawsuit asks a district court in Massachusetts to immediately stop the order from going into effect on Feb. 19.
Bonta said the order would deny the future citizenship of 20,000 children born in California each year.
