Berkeley, a Look Back: Idea of subway through Berkeley dates back to 1924

The Chamber body committee declared that the only practicable method to avoid congestion is to build a subway through the central business district. The congestion and hazard is exceptionally bad in the district between Durant Avenue and Bancroft Way, and Berkeley Way and is getting worse.
Neighbors had been agitating for some time to have the freight yards moved to west Berkeley, citing the incompatibility of heavy freight shipments coming into the middle of what was now a fairly built up residential neighborhood.
