Amid increased ICE activity, advocacy groups seek additional funding from Alameda County
Briefly

ICE raids in California have alarmed Alameda County's immigrant population, straining limited advocacy resources and public defenders. The local Board of Supervisors allocated $3.5 million in March to enhance legal support and education for immigrants. However, advocates argue that this funding is insufficient given the federal government's intensified enforcement activities. The anxiety among over 100,000 undocumented immigrants is palpable, highlighted by recent deportations despite pending legal orders. Critics point to a concerning trend of broader enforcement measures by ICE, disregarding due process and the safety of vulnerable communities.
When a federal agency shows no respect for due process, violates domestic and international laws, and engages in excessive force against unarmed civilians, it fosters fear.
We're very grateful for the county's investment to date, but I think we all know $700,000 is not enough to set up an infrastructure that covers an entire county.
