More than 351,000 parking tickets were issued in 2023, representing a 15% increase from the previous year, generating at least €14 million for local authorities.
Galway City Council reported issuing 36,645 parking fines in 2022, up from 30,517, attributing this to increased staffing of traffic wardens and better enforcement of parking rules.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council highlighted that in 2022 community wardens were understaffed, leading to increased fines after hiring more staff and training them.
Across Ireland, 23 out of 31 councils reported an increase in traffic enforcement, with higher expectations for fines compared to previous pandemic years.
