New legislation in Ireland will mandate that insurance providers require unique driver numbers for all named drivers before issuing motor insurance policies. This shift aims to address the high rates of uninsured drivers, which are significantly above the European average. Currently, around 188,000 private vehicles in Ireland are uninsured. With enhanced access to driver information for police, the initiative seeks to improve road safety and reduce the financial burden associated with uninsured driver incidents, which can inflate insurance premiums by approximately €35 annually.
The change means that anyone who does not provide the driver numbers for all named drivers on their respective policy will not be legally able to receive motor insurance.
This road safety measure was included in the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 and is aimed at further enhancing road safety.
