EU regulators have fined Meta €797.7 million, accusing it of abusing its dominant market position to unfairly favor its own service, Facebook Marketplace.
Margrethe Vestager, the EU's competition head, stated that Meta's actions unlawfully benefited Facebook Marketplace over other online classified ad providers, violating EU antitrust rules.
Meta intends to appeal the decision but indicated it will comply and work on a solution to address EU concerns, claiming that user consent was overlooked.
Though fined for antitrust practices, Meta argues that users are not required to engage with the Marketplace, suggesting that the competition threat is hypothetical.
