Legal Aid Agency breach may encompass millions of people | Computer Weekly
Briefly

The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) has confirmed it was hit by a cyber attack affecting personal data of legal aid applicants over the past 15 years. Initially, they detected the breach on 23 April 2025. They promptly secured their online services and began collaborating with the National Crime Agency and National Cyber Security Centre. However, by 16 May, they discovered the attackers accessed sensitive information from various applicants, including those in criminal and family law cases. The data breach potentially affects contact information, national IDs, and criminal history, sparking concerns for 2.1 million data points revealed by intruders.
I understand this news will be shocking and upsetting for people, and I am extremely sorry this has happened.
Since the discovery of the attack, my team has been working around the clock with the NCSC to bolster the security of our systems so we can safely continue the vital work of the agency.
