Dutch watchdog fines Uber over driver data protection DW 08/26/2024
Briefly

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) stated that Uber's transfer of sensitive driver information to the US violated GDPR regulations, which are designed to safeguard personal data.
DPA chairman Aleid Wolfsen emphasized the seriousness of the violation by saying, 'Uber did not meet the requirements of the GDPR to ensure the level of protection to the data with regard to transfers to the US.'
Despite facing a considerable penalty of 290 million euros, Uber intends to appeal the fine, arguing that their data transfer practices were compliant during a tumultuous period.
The investigation was prompted by complaints from over 170 French drivers regarding Uber's handling of driver data, highlighting concerns about cross-border data protection.
