ChatGPT accused of saying an innocent man murdered his children
Briefly

A Norwegian man, Arve Hjalmar Holmen, has filed a privacy complaint against OpenAI after ChatGPT falsely labeled him a convicted murderer. The output, which misrepresented his life, mixed factual details with fiction, causing alarm. Advocacy group Noyb is seeking action from Norwegian authorities, claiming OpenAI's practices violate GDPR. The complaint emphasizes the necessity for accurate personal data and criticizes the inadequacy of OpenAI's disclaimers. This case is Noyb's second complaint against ChatGPT, highlighting ongoing concerns about the reliability of AI-generated information.
The GDPR is clear. Personal data has to be accurate. And if it's not, users have the right to have it changed to reflect the truth.
You can't just spread false information and in the end add a small disclaimer saying that everything you said may just not be true.
Austrian advocacy group Noyb filed a complaint with the Norwegian Datatilsynet on behalf of Holmen, accusing OpenAI of violating GDPR.
This is Noyb's second official complaint regarding ChatGPT, though the first had lower stakes: in April 2024 it filed on behalf of a public figure.
