Amazon has new grocery competition as Dollar General races to grow 1-hour delivery
Briefly

Dollar General fulfills about 75% of delivery orders within one hour by partnering with DoorDash since 2021 and adding Uber Eats to expand service. Customers purchase fresh produce, dairy, and frozen foods through the fast-delivery option. The chain plans to offer delivery from 16,000 of its roughly 21,000 stores by year-end, up from an earlier plan of 10,000. Fast grocery delivery serves as a competitive tactic against Amazon and Walmart. Amazon has expanded same-day perishable grocery delivery to 1,000 cities and intends to double that footprint by the end of 2025, while Walmart reports about one-third of store-picked orders reach customers within three hours.
About 75% of delivery orders at Dollar General are delivered within one hour, CEO Todd Vasos said on an earnings call Thursday. Dollar General has worked with DoorDash on same-day delivery since 2021 and said earlier this month that it would also partner with Uber Eats to expand delivery. Customers are buying fresh groceries, such as produce and dairy products, as well as frozen foods, through Dollar General's fast delivery options, Vasos said.
Dollar General has traditionally attracted shoppers who are looking for low prices or are on limited budgets. Now, many are looking to the chain for quick deliveries, Vasos added. "We believe that it's a powerful combination that we will continue to cultivate in the years to come," he said. Shoppers have no shortage of options for getting groceries delivered fast these days. Earlier this month, Amazon said it had expanded its same-day perishable grocery delivery services to 1,000 cities and towns in the US.
