A generation ago, a charismatic former military officer, Hugo Chavez, promised a more inclusive democracy in Venezuela. However, his successor, Nicolas Maduro, now leads an authoritarian regime marked by jailing dissidents, torturing enemies, media censorship, and electoral manipulation.
Venezuela is currently facing international isolation, a prolonged economic crisis, and a significant exodus of citizens fleeing abroad due to the oppressive governance under Maduro.
Steve Levitsky, a democracy expert at Harvard University, labeled the recent election in Venezuela as one of the most severe instances of electoral fraud seen in modern Latin American history.
