U.N. Sees Human Rights Abyss' in Myanmar as Military Kills Civilians
Briefly

James Rodehaver, head of the U.N. human rights team, stated, "Myanmar is plumbing the depths of a human rights abyss, with a vacuum in the rule of law that is being filled by summary killings, torture and sexual violence. The military's tactics reflect both their brutality and diminishing control over the country. Pro-democracy forces are now actively battling the junta, contributing to a chaotic civil war with devastating consequences for civilians."
According to the U.N. report, military authorities have arrested around 27,400 people since February 2021, which includes at least 9,000 people over the last 15 months, leading to a humanitarian crisis. The report highlights that from April 2023 to June, at least 2,414 civilians were killed, including 334 children, with many deaths occurring in military airstrikes or artillery bombardments, painting a dire picture of the situation on the ground.
