More than 80 lawyers, academics, and activists in the UAE convicted in shadowy national security trials expected release upon sentence expiration. Instead, they were all prosecuted again, majority receiving 10 years to life terms.
The men were accused of forming a terrorist organization, the Justice and Dignity Committee. Court in Abu Dhabi sentenced 10 to 15 years and 43 to life in prison, shocking many, including an Emirati dissident.
Emirati dissident Ahmed Al Nuaimi shared his disbelief, questioning how advocating for democracy could lead to severe imprisonment. His brother received a life sentence, which typically means 25 years in the UAE.
