There is no formal diagnostic criteria for colic. Physicians use 'the rule of 3s' - if the infant under 3 months cries for more than 3 hours/day for more than 3 days/week, it's presumed colic. Diagnosis is retrospective.
Colic is believed to stem from various factors like immature digestive and nervous systems, environmental influences, overstimulation, and parental stress, causing intense fussiness and crying episodes.
