The spotted lanternflies, once prevalent in New York City, have significantly decreased this year, showing the impact of resident efforts to control them.
Shauna Moore, director of horticulture at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, remarked on the lack of spotted lanternflies this year, noting, "We're still seeing a few here and there, but oh, my gosh, they are not in the mass abundance as they were last year."
Experts report that spotted lanternflies have become harder to spot this summer, and Brian Eshenaur mentioned, "If 2020 was the year the invasive insects took New York City, 2024 might be remembered as the year New Yorkers got their city back."
