The measure, known as Proposition 1 and the Equal Rights Amendment, was intended to codify abortion rights in the State Constitution by including pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes and reproductive health care and autonomy as a protected class.
Abortion is health care, health care is a human right and that right is finally enshrined in the New York State Constitution, Gov. Kathy Hochul, who campaigned extensively for the amendment, wrote on social media after the measure passed on Tuesday.
The measure was fiercely opposed by Republicans and anti-abortion activists, including a Schlitz beer scion who spent $6.5 million to defeat it.
With 69 percent of the vote counted, roughly 63 percent of New Yorkers supported the initiative, hewing closely to a recent Siena College poll that showed that some 69 percent of New Yorkers approved of the amendment.
