A study by Common Sense Media reveals that nearly three quarters of U.S. teenagers have used AI tools such as CHAI, Character.AI, Nomi, and Replika for advice and conversations. More than half of teens use these AI companions regularly for entertainment and support. One third have discussed serious issues with AI rather than humans. Although teens still prefer human interaction, the shift towards AI raises concerns about their social and critical thinking skills, especially with a quarter sharing personal information with these tools.
More than half (52%) of U.S. teenagers use AI companions regularly, engaging in activities like role-playing, seeking support, or casual chatting.
One third of surveyed teens have discussed serious matters with AI companions instead of real people, finding AI chats equally or more satisfying.
