Nearly two dozen government-owned chimpanzees housed at the Alamogordo Primate Facility will be relocated to a Louisiana sanctuary, following years of advocacy for their transfer.
"We didn't come to this decision lightly,' said Tara Schwetz, highlighting concerns over the future care of the chimps amid potential staffing shortages at Alamogordo.
The NIH's ongoing assessment indicated the chimps are too sick or frail to be moved, yet relocation is now critical due to the facility's looming staffing issues.
Animal welfare groups had previously filed lawsuits against the NIH, asserting it violated federal law by delaying the relocation of the chimpanzees from the facility.
