Bookshop, founded by Andy Hunter in 2020 to provide an independent alternative to Amazon, has expanded its offerings to include e-books. This shift allows over 2,200 participating independent bookstores to generate profits from digital sales for the first time. The platform now features over a million digital books and plans to include self-published and independently published works later this year. The move comes as a response to the previously low e-book sales among indie stores, creating a significant opportunity in a market long dominated by Amazon.
With over 2,200 independent bookstores joining Bookshop to sell books, the initiative has generated significant profits, amounting to more than $35 million for its partners.
Now that Bookshop is venturing into e-books, this service aims to empower independent bookstores, allowing them to sell digital formats directly from their websites.
