Healthy eating: Why teens gorge and older people peck DW 08/22/2024

"Our body tells us more or less what to eat and when to eat, and maybe we should listen," said Susanne Klaus. Our eating habits change through life stages, from infancy to old age, influenced by hunger hormones and bodily needs.
"These [are self-regulating] mechanisms that drive hunger and satiety," said Klaus. Hunger hormones like leptin and ghrelin signal to the brain, ensuring our bodies regulate energy intake efficiently.
Ghrelin, the best-known hunger hormone, is released by the stomach, signaling the brain to seek food. When full, its release slows, creating a sensation of fullness.
Other hormones that manage fullness include insulin and GLP-1, which is mimicked by drugs like Ozempic, showcasing the complex interplay of hormones in our eating behaviors.
