Gulf of Mexico? Gulf of America? What's in a Name, Anyway?
Briefly

President Trump's executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has sparked a mixture of confusion and amusement in Mexico and Cuba. Local fishermen, like Francisco Javier Remes Sanchez, expressed outrage over what they see as an alteration of a cultural and natural heritage dating back to the 16th century. While the order only affects U.S. official documents and geographic references, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed that internationally, the gulf remains the Gulf of Mexico, highlighting a disconnection between the U.S. action and local sentiments.
Mr. Trump's order renaming the world's largest gulf only changed the name in the United States, where he has authority, not internationally.
He's changing the name of a cultural and natural heritage of Mexico since the 16th century, when the United States hadn't even been formed.
For us and for the whole world, it is still the Gulf of Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said, briefly chuckling when addressing the topic.
The Interior Department announced the switch. But still, across Mexico and Cuba, Mr. Trump's move was met with a combination of bewilderment, indignation, indifference and, at times, laughter.
