Coventry student who hid newborn baby in cereal box convicted of murder
Briefly

David Mason KC, prosecuting, stated that Jia Xin Teo concealed her pregnancy and the birth of her baby, ultimately leading to tragic consequences. During her trial, it became clear she had the opportunity to seek help but avoided it, choosing to give birth in isolation instead.
Teo claimed she was frightened about her family's reaction back in Malaysia and alleged to have heard voices telling her to dispose of the child, but the jury found these defenses implausible.
The court heard that her flatmate found a disturbing scene in their living space, and despite seeing her condition, Teo still denied medical treatment when the ambulance was called.
James Leslie Francis from the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the severity of Teo’s actions, noting that she not only hid her pregnancy but also actively deceived those around her to keep her child’s existence a secret.
